The Ethical Revolution Starts Now!!

As my first book, #IntentionalIntegrity, is launched today by St. Martin's Press, I'm reflecting on where this journey started...with Mom. She passed away 14 years ago, but her influence on me is still tangible. She was an avid reader, always sitting in the same rocking chair, glasses on, a good light nearby and a book in her hand. If she were alive, Mom would be at the bookstore today as the doors opened, buying every copy, proudly telling the employees that her son was the author.

She'd be particularly proud of the mission of the book..#integrity, as it was so very important to her. Now, I can almost hear her remind me that though this book is complete, it is just the start. I am profoundly disturbed by the deficit of integrity in so many areas of society. And yet, I've never been so hopeful -- I'm encouraged by the fast moving trend of global connectedness that has released the energy of an ethical revolution. I am hoping that the book will be a platform, a starting point from which we can all applaud acts of integrity, and demand change when basic ethical principles are being violated. Let's get started.

Harvard Business School Club of New York

In the last few months we have seen just how important integrity and a moral code for companies is. Some companies went to incredible lengths to support their employees; while some didn’t. Tomorrow, July 23, I'm speaking to the Harvard Business School Club of New York in a virtual session about my new book Intentional Integrity. We'll talk about how business leaders can prioritize integrity by developing a home-grown, authentic approach that builds brand recognition, strengthens relationships with stakeholders, and ultimately helps their bottom line.

Today's the last day to RSVP to receive details on the discussion. Link here:

I'm fed up with workplace environments like the one described in this story about the Washington Redskins. The owner, Daniel Snyder, apparently has a lot more to clean up than the team's nickname -- he needs to move quickly to completely change the #culture of the organization, and deal directly with the sort of horrific behavior that apparently has been going on there for years.

This story has too much detail to brush off lightly. The National Football League (NFL) needs to be proactive here -- for too long, they've been behind the curve in important integrity related areas like concussion protocol and racial justice. Goodell should step in and oversee a thorough review of not only the Redskins, but the cultures at all the NFL team offices to ensure that this sort of offensive behavior isn't going on across the league.

Good to see that Amazon is establishing a counterfeit crime unit. Counterfeit goods have been a real problem since the inception of the marketplace, I'm surprised that it's taken the company this long for them to set one up.

It's not only the right thing to do (Amazon shouldn't be dealing in counterfeit merchandise), but it's actually detrimental to their overall #business, reducing buyer #trust and driving legitimate sellers who are already operating on thin margins out of business.

Hoping that the company continues to invest in this important area.

A week ago, I posted that The North Face, a VF Company was the first major retailer to pull advertising dollars from Facebook over the platform's failure to take steps to combat clearly inappropriate content. Companies want to do business with other companies that share its #values, and I thought that other companies might follow North Face here.

Credit North Face for leading there -- after they took the first step, hundreds of advertisers have followed and pulled their advertising from Facebook, including The Coca-Cola CompanyUnileverThe Hershey CompanyWalgreens, and Ford Motor Company. Even adidas, beset with their other ethical issues, has pulled their ads.

Granted, it's a little easier to be ethical during a pandemic when marketing dollars are often the first budget item to get cut. Still, platforms don't get a pass anymore -- the world is forcing them to own what appears on their site, even if the content is created by third parties. It's getting harder and harder to disavow third party content, and collect advertising revenue that's based on that content.

When someone abuses their power and position to act out on gender or racial biases in any workplace, it undermines trust and can derail the lives of all involved. Law enforcement officers have a special workplace, our communities. They have tremendous power and a unique mission -- to serve and protect. When any one of them abuses that power, that abuse can rip at deep societal wounds and tear us apart from each other across the world at a time when we need to hold each other tight and work together.

As a former federal prosecutor, I have a deep appreciation for the police and know that many of them are good people who risk their lives for their work, committed to doing the right thing without bias or prejudice. Now, more than ever, we need those good officers to speak up, lead by words and example with their colleagues, never be bystanders to the sort of behavior that underlies what happened last week in Minneapolis to George Floyd.

Credit Houston police chief Art Acevedo for leading with a credible voice and a concrete path forward. The rest of us need to speak up and be clear about where we stand on discrimination...and what we expect from those in power. Integrity is contagious...we need to spread it.

A New Chapter

Today is my last full time day at Airbnb after over 4 terrific years as the company's general counsel and chief #ethics officer. While I'll remain connected to the company as an advisor, I'll wake up tomorrow without a full time "day job" for the first time since law school. It feels great, and I couldn't be more excited about the next chapter of my career -- helping companies find purpose and drive #integrity into their culture.

I also couldn't be more grateful. Airbnb is a special place, and it starts at the top -- Brian, Nate and Joe, a sincere thank you. The entire #leadership team at Airbnb is first rate, it was a privilege to work with them and learn from them all together in service of a very authentic, human mission -- promoting #belongingin the world. The company has also put together an extraordinary group of talented lawyers and legal professionals, really good human beings across the world who are among the best in their respective fields.

And finally, there are the thousands of employees around the world who bought into, and through their words and actions shaped, a unique #culture and workplace that's grounded in integrity. I'll miss all of you. As tough as the last few months have been, I know that because of you, Airbnb will be back, stronger than ever.
